#EndItMovement, advocacy, Human Trafficking, Modern Day Slavery

The #enditmovement has to become a higher priority in my life

Every day, I try to take a few minutes and look at everything I have to do in the day, review the social action I am involved in promoting and my life as a whole.

Today, something struck me.

Let’s take a moment to review my current volunteer commitments…

  1. I work with the #AmericanDiabetesAssociation her is Rochester, NY on #diabetes #awareness through the #tourdecure and previously with the #getmovingchallenge. (ADA website)
  2. I support the #AmercianHeartAssociation here in Rochester as well through the annual #heartwalk, and hopefully this year, the annual #heartball.
  3. (AHA website)
  4. I serve on the board for a local program called #HelpMeRead to improve #literacy and to improve the graduation rate for African American males here in the city. The dropout rate for this group has been listed at 90%. (COLC website)
  5. Let’s not forget commitments of small group leadership, helping out with the community meals and the music ministry at my church. (Church website)

Okay…that is quite a list, good organizations and it took time to review this list, but you may be asking what is it that struck me?

Simply, it is that I am FREE.

I am free to help who want and as often as I desire. There are so many in this world who are not free and there is a number I have known for several years which haunts me daily.

Over 27 million people are caught in the trap of #moderndayslavery and #humantrafficking.

I reminded myself this morning that this is not only happening in countries far away from me but right here in the United States, in New York and in Monroe & Ontario County (Rochester) where I am sitting right now.

In November 2015, I volunteered at Covenant House in New York City and was told they have an undisclosed location for those coming out of human trafficking situations. Again…mind blowing. This was after I’d heard speakers from the International Justice Mission and a shelter in the Souther Tier of New York for women coming out of forced prostitution primarily.

So today, my Instagram, Twitter and Facebook feeds all blew up with these images of red X’s and I quickly realized that I forgot today was the day to bring forth awareness through the #enditmovement (here is their website). Honestly, awareness is s daily commitment.

Of all the causes I support, and even the health conditions I personally deal with including diabetes and #cardiac/#heart issues, human trafficking and modern slavery always seems to upset me the most, yet I do the least.

So, in short, I need to say something and do something. I know their are many ways to do this since my background is in #advertising and #marketing. I will have to think this through, pray on it and come up with an actionable strategy. This may include pulling back on other commitments, but the visions I have seen in regards to forced labor, prostitution and what bothers me the most, children who are forced to the front lines of a battle, with a rifle, risking their young lives for causes they do not understand

Let’s open our ears and our eyes, keep an eye on your own neighborhood and town. When commuting to the cities, try not to run by everyone…someone may need your help to set them free.

Time for me to be the change…how about you?
